A group of heavily armed bandits have carried out a deadly overnight attack on a community in Kaduna State, northern Nigeria, killing several residents and abducting others in what witnesses described as a terrifying night of gunfire and chaos.
According to reports, the assault occurred late Sunday night in Makarfi Local Government Area near Zaria, where gunmen stormed the community and began firing shots into the air as residents fled their homes in panic.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers moved from house to house during the raid, targeting residents and forcing some families to surrender valuables before abducting victims. Several villagers were reportedly killed during the violent invasion, while others were taken away by the gunmen into nearby forests.
Residents Describe Night Of Terror
Videos circulating on social media showed frightened residents running through the streets while gunshots echoed across the community. One widely shared clip reportedly featured a young boy recounting how the armed attackers invaded his family’s home and abducted his grandmother during the raid.
According to the boy’s account, the attackers demanded mobile phones from family members before assaulting some of the women in the house.
“They slapped the wife of the house and injured another woman with the edge of their gun before taking my grandmother away,” he said in the video describing the ordeal.
Residents said the gunmen eventually fled the area through the Tashan Maliki direction, leaving behind a trail of destruction and fear in the community.
Rising Insecurity In Northern Nigeria
The latest attack highlights the worsening security crisis across parts of northern Nigeria, where bandit groups frequently carry out kidnappings, killings and village raids.
Security analysts say these criminal networks often operate from forest hideouts and rely on kidnapping for ransom as a major source of income. In many cases, entire communities are left vulnerable due to limited security presence in rural areas.
Over the past few years, Kaduna and several other states in northwestern Nigeria have experienced repeated attacks by bandits targeting villages, schools and highways. These groups typically raid communities on motorcycles, abduct residents and demand large ransom payments from families.
Calls For Stronger Security Response
Local leaders and residents have continued to urge the Nigerian government and security agencies to intensify operations against the armed groups responsible for the attacks.
The persistent violence has forced many villagers to flee their homes, leaving farms abandoned and worsening humanitarian conditions in affected regions.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement on the latest attack, but security forces are expected to launch a search operation to track down the perpetrators and rescue the kidnapped victims.
For many residents in the region, however, the fear remains that another attack could occur at any moment, as communities across northern Nigeria continue to grapple with the growing threat of banditry and rural terrorism.
