At least More than three passengers have been killed and several others injured after suspected terrorists attacked a Lagos-bound commercial bus along the Kabba–Obajana road in Kogi State, Nigeria.
According to reports, the attack occurred when heavily armed gunmen ambushed the vehicle while it was travelling along the highway. The assailants reportedly opened fire on the bus, causing panic among passengers and other motorists using the road.
Sources said the bus was carrying passengers heading toward Lagos when the attackers struck. During the assault, several travellers were hit by gunfire, leaving three passengers dead, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Witnesses said the sudden gunfire forced some vehicles behind the attacked bus to stop or turn back in an attempt to escape the scene. The injured victims were reportedly rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
The Kabba–Obajana axis of Kogi State has in recent years witnessed repeated attacks by armed groups targeting motorists and commercial vehicles travelling through the region. Security analysts say the route has become increasingly dangerous due to frequent ambushes and kidnappings carried out by criminal gangs and terrorists operating within the forests along the highway.
Residents and travellers have repeatedly raised concerns about the deteriorating security situation along the corridor, urging authorities to deploy more security personnel to safeguard motorists and communities in the area.
As of the time of reporting, security agencies had not released detailed information about the attack or confirmed whether any arrests had been made in connection with the incident.
The latest assault adds to a growing list of violent attacks on Nigerian highways, highlighting the continuing insecurity affecting several regions of the country and the risks faced daily by commuters travelling between major cities.
