Panic has spread across a community in Kogi State, Nigeria, after suspected armed bandits reportedly attacked farmers working on their land, destroying farmlands and worsening fears of insecurity in the area.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Friday morning in Egbe, located in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, where armed attackers stormed a cashew plantation near Comprehensive College in the town. During the attack, the gunmen targeted farmers working on the farmland, forcing residents to flee for safety.

Farmers Targeted in Early Morning Attack

Local sources revealed that the suspected bandits attacked at least two farmers while they were working on the plantation, creating panic among villagers who rely heavily on farming for their livelihoods. The attackers reportedly vandalised and destroyed parts of the farmland before fleeing the area.

The sudden assault has left many residents terrified, with several farmers now reportedly afraid to return to their farms due to fears of further attacks.

Rising Insecurity in Farming Communities

The latest incident highlights the growing insecurity facing rural communities in Nigeria, particularly farmers who often become easy targets for armed groups operating in remote areas.

Many communities across the North-Central region of Nigeria, including parts of Kogi State, have experienced increasing attacks by suspected bandits and kidnappers in recent years. These attacks frequently involve abductions, killings, and destruction of farmland, severely affecting food production and local economies.

Residents Call for Urgent Security Intervention

Following the attack, residents are calling on security agencies and the Kogi State government to urgently strengthen security presence in the area to prevent further violence.

Community members say the continued attacks on farmers could have serious consequences for agriculture and food supply in the region if farmers abandon their lands out of fear.

Security authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the incident, but locals say they hope swift action will be taken to restore safety and allow farmers to return to their fields without fear.
