Panic and unrest have engulfed communities in Kwara State, Nigeria, as residents flee their homes and stage protests over a surge in killings and kidnappings by armed groups, according to reports on Friday.
The crisis is particularly severe in Idofin Odo Ashe, where locals say kidnappers and attackers have operated with alarming frequency, striking almost daily and leaving a trail of fear, deaths, and abductions in their wake. Residents revealed that for over eight months, armed criminals have continued to terrorize the area unchecked, killing victims and abducting others for ransom.
Frustrated by what they describe as government inaction and worsening insecurity, community members took to the streets in protest, demanding urgent intervention from authorities. Demonstrators reportedly blocked major roads and expressed anger over the continued loss of lives, with some protests turning emotional as residents highlighted the scale of suffering in the community.
Many families have abandoned their homes entirely, fleeing to safer areas amid fears of further attacks. The growing displacement reflects the depth of the crisis, as entire communities struggle to cope with the persistent threat posed by kidnappers and violent gangs.
The latest unrest comes against the backdrop of a broader security crisis in Kwara State and other parts of Nigeria, where armed groups, including bandits and extremist factions, have intensified attacks on rural communities. Earlier in 2026, hundreds of people were killed in coordinated assaults in parts of the state, highlighting the escalating insecurity in the region.
Despite repeated appeals from residents, there are growing concerns over the adequacy of security responses, as communities continue to face daily threats with limited protection. The situation has raised fresh questions about the effectiveness of current strategies to combat insecurity across Nigeria’s central region.
As fear spreads and displacement rises, residents warn that without immediate and decisive intervention, the situation could deteriorate further, leaving more communities vulnerable to the relentless wave of violence.
