Global Tension Surges as US-Israel Strikes on Iran Expand Conflict Across Middle East

The Middle East conflict has intensified into a broader regional crisis following a coordinated military offensive by United States and Israeli forces on Iran that began on February 28, 2026, triggering massive retaliation, global diplomatic pushback and widespread instability.

In a dramatic escalation, U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli leadership declared “major combat operations,” with strikes targeting Iranian military sites and high-level leadership infrastructure. Senior Iranian officials — including commanders and defence personnel were reported killed in the initial offensive, and attacks are widely believed to have severely damaged key regime targets.

Iran’s response was swift and expansive: ballistic missiles and drone volleys struck Israeli territory and U.S. bases across the Persian Gulf, including in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates. Explosions and air-raid sirens were reported across several capitals, and civilian casualties and infrastructure damage mounted in the early days of the confrontations.

The conflict’s toll is significant. Airstrikes in Iranian cities — including Tehran, Isfahan and Bushehr — have caused hundreds of deaths and extensive destruction, while retaliatory barrages saw waves of missiles and drones fired at Israel. Civilian centres such as residential neighbourhoods and public infrastructure were struck, resulting in confirmed fatalities and many more injured.

International reactions have varied widely. Some world leaders and organisations have strongly condemned the attacks and called for de-escalation and a return to diplomacy, while others have defended defensive actions or urged restraint. Key global powers such as Russia and China criticised the offensive and emphasised respect for sovereignty, and the United Nations appealed for immediate ceasefire efforts amid growing humanitarian fears.

The wider diplomatic fallout is already evident: Saudi Arabia has summoned Iran’s ambassador in protest of attacks hitting its territory, reflecting heightened tension among Gulf states. European nations issued statements urging calm and dialogue, and United Nations deliberations were convened to address the crisis before it escalates further.

Beyond military and diplomatic fronts, the conflict is affecting communities globally. Protests and solidarity movements have appeared in diaspora communities, while airspace closures, economic disruptions and sharp increases in energy market volatility have rippled outward, affecting international travel and trade.

As violence continues and combat operations persist without clear end in sight, the conflict’s evolution remains a focal point for governments, militaries and global markets — underpinning deep uncertainty over regional stability and the potential for broader conflict across the Middle East and beyond.
