ABUJA — The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a ₦4 billion grant for each of 12 universities across the country to rehabilitate engineering workshops, laboratories and procure modern equipment as part of a major push to strengthen practical engineering education and align academic training with industry needs.

The initiative was announced on Monday by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, at the inauguration of a monitoring and implementation committee for the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Special High-Impact Intervention Projects in Abuja. The scheme is expected to upgrade existing facilities, build new workshops where needed, and ensure universities can deliver hands-on technical skills to students.

Speaking at the event, Alausa said the intervention is a key part of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which emphasises skills development, innovation and economic diversification. He stressed that funding alone is not enough and that the committee is tasked with ensuring transparency, accountability and timely execution of the projects.

According to the statement, each beneficiary institution will receive ₦4 billion to upgrade their engineering and technology faculties — effectively pushing a total of ₦48 billion into the enhancement of practical training, research facilities and equipment acquisition across the states represented in the programme.

The beneficiary universities include Federal University of Technology, Minna (Niger State), FUT Akure (Ondo State), FUT Babura (Jigawa State), FUT Ikot-Abasi (Akwa Ibom State), FUT Owerri (Imo State) and the Nigerian Army University, Biu (Borno State). Other recipients are African Aviation and Aerospace University (Abuja), Shehu Shagari University of Education (Sokoto), Enugu State University of Science and Technology, University of Ilesha (Osun State), Delta State University Abraka and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (Bauchi State).

The government said the project will focus on bridging the gap between theory and industry requirements — strengthening university research capacity, facilitating practical problem-solving skills and improving graduate employability in critical sectors such as engineering, manufacturing and technology.
