Canada has stated that no formal request has been made to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) regarding U.S. President Donald Trump’s call for allied support in securing the Strait of Hormuz, as tensions continue to rise amid the ongoing Iran war.
Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand clarified that, to Canada’s knowledge, NATO has not received any official appeal for the type of military assistance being publicly demanded by Trump. She emphasized that decisions involving NATO operations must follow established principles of collective defence and be agreed upon by all member states—not driven by a single country.
Trump had earlier urged NATO members, including Canada, to help secure the vital shipping route, warning that failure to respond could have serious consequences for the alliance’s future. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy corridor, has been heavily disrupted amid the conflict, with Iran restricting tanker movement and triggering a global oil shock.
Despite the pressure, Canada signaled a cautious approach, stressing that discussions among NATO allies have not yet taken place. Anand suggested that any collective response must align with NATO’s foundational framework, which prioritizes coordinated decision-making and mutual agreement among member nations.
The situation highlights growing divisions among Western allies over how to respond to the escalating Middle East crisis. While the United States continues to push for a broader coalition to secure the strategic waterway, several countries have expressed reluctance to become directly involved in the conflict.
The Strait of Hormuz carries roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil supply, making its disruption a major concern for global markets and energy security. The ongoing blockade has already contributed to rising oil prices and heightened fears of economic instability worldwide.
As diplomatic tensions mount, Canada’s position reflects a broader hesitation among NATO allies—raising questions about alliance unity and the challenges of coordinating a response to an increasingly complex and volatile geopolitical crisis.
