New York — In the wake of a rapidly intensifying military confrontation involving the United States, Israel and Iran, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for an immediate ceasefire and return to diplomacy, warning that continued hostilities risk triggering a broader, destabilising regional conflict.
Guterres, speaking ahead of a planned emergency session of the United Nations Security Council, condemned recent strikes by U.S. and Israeli forces against multiple targets in Iran — actions that provoked significant retaliation from Tehran. He emphasised that “all Member States must respect their obligations under international law, including the UN Charter,” which prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.
The secretary-general’s statement underscored the grave humanitarian consequences that escalating military operations could have on millions of civilians across the Middle East, urging parties to halt hostilities while diplomatic channels are pursued. “The continued exchange of military strikes threatens international peace, regional stability and the lives of ordinary people,” Guterres warned, appealing to all sides to “return immediately to the negotiating table and avoid further bloodshed.”
His appeal comes amid reports of significant military engagements and retaliatory strikes throughout the region, with world leaders expressing deep concern and urging restraint. While the United Nations’ highest official pushed for an urgent ceasefire, diplomatic efforts are expected to intensify at the Security Council session, convened at the request of multiple member states alarmed by the rapidly evolving crisis.
As tensions continue to mount, Guterres reaffirmed that sustainable peace can only be achieved through diplomatic negotiation and adherence to international law — a message he stressed must now guide global responses to this dangerous escalation.
