Armed terrorists have attacked Koro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria, killing at least one person and forcing many villagers to flee their homes, local authorities and residents told Dalena Reporters on Sunday, February 8, 2026.
The assault, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, followed a wave of insecurity in parts of Kwara State that has already drawn national and international attention this week. Witnesses said gunmen arrived in the community, opened fire and caused widespread fear as neighbours sought safety in surrounding bushland and neighbouring villages.
Local leaders confirmed that at least one resident was killed during the incident, though detailed casualty figures were still being compiled at the time of the report. Several others were reported to have been wounded, and families were seen leaving the area with their belongings in search of safer locations.
“The entire community is afraid,” a displaced villager told reporters. “People are running into the bushes to protect themselves and their children. This is the third time in a short while that we are facing attacks.”
The attack underscores ongoing security challenges in northern and central Nigeria, where banditry, kidnappings and gun violence have disrupted daily life for rural residents. Officials from the Kwara State Government did not immediately issue a comment, and no official statement had been released by federal security agencies at the time of filing.
Community members and advocacy groups have repeatedly called for stronger protective measures along key road corridors and rural settlements, arguing that sustained insecurity is undermining local economies, access to education and public confidence in safety.
As investigations continue, residents urged government and security agencies to prioritise rescue and relief support for displaced families and to work toward restoring peace and normalcy in affected communities.
