In Nigeria: Catholic Priests Protest Mass Violence in Taraba, Cite Destruction of Over 200 Churches

Hundreds of Catholic clergy and faithful in Taraba State staged a solidarity protest in Jalingo this week, condemning what they describe as unchecked violence that has left scores dead, communities razed, and more than 200 churches and Christian settlements destroyed in southern parts of the state. The peaceful demonstration, led by priests from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Wukari and neighbouring dioceses, highlighted deep frustration with the ongoing security crisis and called for urgent government action.

According to protest organisers, the clergy marched through the state capital on Thursday, February 12, 2026, carrying placards decrying the “relentless killing of Christians and destruction of houses of worship” in Takum, Ussa, and Donga Local Government Areas — regions that have borne the brunt of recent assaults attributed to suspected militant herders and armed groups. Many participants said the situation has “spiralled out of control,” with religious buildings and entire communities reportedly burned or abandoned amid rampant insecurity.

Speakers at the event stressed that the violence has not only cost lives but violated the rights of citizens to freedom of religion and security of person and property, demanding enhanced protection from state and federal authorities. Church leaders also called for humanitarian support for displaced families, prosecution of perpetrators, and greater accountability from security agencies.

The demonstration reflects mounting discontent among religious communities over what many see as an inadequate response to brutal attacks that have driven thousands from their homes and undermined local stability. Civilians and church officials alike are now urging political leaders to take decisive measures to protect vulnerable populations and stem the tide of violence in parts of Nigeria’s volatile Middle Belt.
