A devastating mass shooting in the remote town of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, Canada, has resulted in 10 deaths including the suspected shooter and dozens of injuries, authorities said on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, marking one of the deadliest gun violence events in recent Canadian history.

The attack began at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, where the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed six victims were found fatally shot inside the campus. Another person died while being transported to hospital, and two additional bodies were discovered at a residence that police believe was connected to the attack. The suspected shooter described by investigators as a female wearing a dress was also found dead at the school from an apparent self-inflicted injury.

More than 25 people were wounded in the incident, including at least two who were airlifted to medical facilities with life-threatening injuries, RCMP officials said. The town of Tumbler Ridge, nestled in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies and home to fewer than 3,000 residents, was placed on lockdown as emergency responders secured the scene and evacuated students and staff to safety.

Police arrived at the school within minutes of the first 911 call, but investigators have not yet disclosed the identities of the victims or the suspect, nor have they confirmed a motive for the attack, citing ongoing inquiries. RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd said authorities continue to examine how the shooter was connected to the victims and the broader sequence of events.

The tragedy has shaken the close-knit community. British Columbia Premier David Eby described the incident as an “unimaginable tragedy” and pledged provincial support for families and residents affected by the violence. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney postponed planned travel and offered national condolences, commending first responders for their efforts.

Tumbler Ridge Secondary School — part of School District 59 Peace River South — will remain closed for the rest of the week as counselors and mental health professionals prepare to support survivors, families and staff struggling with the emotional toll of the incident.

School shootings are rare in Canada, a country with relatively strict firearm laws compared with many other nations. Nonetheless, this event has reignited national discussions about gun violence, public safety, and preventive measures aimed at protecting communities and schools from future attacks.
