The Ugandan army on Friday carried out a raid on the residence of opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, in Magere, Wakiso District, demanding that his wife either surrender him or disclose his location, SaharaReporters has learned.
According to eyewitness accounts and information obtained by SaharaReporters, soldiers stormed the home of the National Unity Platform (NUP) leader after midnight, ordering Barbara Itungo Kyagulanyi (Barbara Kayaga) to reveal Bobi Wine’s whereabouts.
The soldiers allegedly threatened to arrest her and similar family members if she refused to disclose the location of her husband, who has been in hiding since rejecting the outcome of Uganda’s January 15 presidential election.
Eyewitnesses told SaharaReporters that the military operation lasted several hours, with troops surrounding the property, questioning neighbours and conducting searches.
The raid comes amid widespread political tensions in Uganda following the election, in which President Yoweri Museveni was declared the winner. Following the vote, Bobi Wine rejected the results and accused the government of electoral irregularities.
In the days after the election, security forces have arrested or detained numerous members of Bobi Wine’s party, and there have been reports of opposition figures including top NUP officials being forcibly taken by the authorities.
The home raid also follows earlier reports that the army had threatened opposition figures with violence if they did not abandon public political activity.
Family members and close associates of Bobi Wine have not publicly responded to the raid as of publication, and authorities have not issued any statements explaining the actions taken at the Magere residence.
