At least two traffic police officers have been killed in a blast in southern Moscow, Russian authorities say, marking another violent incident in the Russian capital amid a spate of explosive attacks in recent days. The officers died early Wednesday morning, December 24, 2025, when an improvised explosive device detonated as they approached a suspicious man near their patrol vehicle on Yeletskaya Street. The suspect believed to have triggered the device also died in the explosion, according to the Russian Investigative Committee’s press service

The blast occurred at roughly 1:30 a.m. local time, prompting a large police and forensic presence. Investigators have opened criminal cases and forensic teams are combing the scene to determine all the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident. Early statements from the committee suggested that officers had stopped to detain the individual when the device was activated, killing both policemen and the man who may have planted or carried the explosive.

This deadly explosion follows another major attack in Moscow just days earlier, when Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, a senior Russian military officer, was killed by a car bomb on December 22, 2025, near Yasenevaya Street a rare targeted strike on a high-ranking official that security authorities credited to hostile actors amid the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war.

The recent string of blasts has alarmed Russian officials, who are treating the incidents as serious criminal and security threats. The Investigative Committee has emphasised the priority of uncovering motives and any wider schemes behind the attacks as the deadly pattern continues in the heart of the country’s capital.
