A transport truck driver in New Tecumseth, Ontario has been charged by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) after a large block of snow and ice was seen resting on the roof of his trailer on a provincial highway, creating a potentially dangerous situation for other motorists, authorities said on Thursday.
The incident unfolded on Wednesday afternoon along Highway 89, when an OPP officer travelling the route noticed the significant accumulation of ice and snow on top of the driver’s commercial trailer. Police stopped the vehicle and charged the driver with having an insecure load on a commercial motor vehicle, a violation under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act aimed at preventing hazards caused by falling debris.
“Ice and snow falling from vehicles can create serious hazards for other road users,” the provincial police said in a post on social media, urging all motorists especially during winter to take the time to clear their vehicles completely before driving.
The OPP warning echoes similar reports in the region of emergency calls filed by police about ice and snow coming off truck roofs, which can strike vehicles behind and lead to crashes or severe injuries.
Police stress that the responsibility to clear snow and ice from transport vehicles rests with the driver and operator, and failure to do so can result in charges and fines, particularly when public safety is threatened.
This incident highlights the heightened risks posed by winter road conditions in Ontario, where snow and freezing temperatures often lead to hazardous accumulations on vehicles and infrastructure if not properly removed before travel.
