At least nine people have been confirmed dead and five others injured following a tragic road accident on the Kaltungo-Cham Road in Kaluwa community, Kaltungo Local Government Area of Gombe State, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported. The crash occurred at about 8:33 a.m. on Monday, December 22, 2025, as travel activity intensified ahead of the yuletide season.

FRSC Gombe Sector Commander Samson Kaura said the collision involved a speeding trailer and a Sharon commercial bus. According to preliminary investigations, the trailer reportedly travelling too fast on a sloping section of the road — lost control due to excessive speed and suspected brake failure, striking the bus from behind and causing it to somersault

A total of 18 persons were involved in the accident. While nine were confirmed dead at the scene and later taken to the General Hospital in Kaltungo, five others sustained injuries of varying severity and were also rushed to the hospital for medical care. Four additional occupants escaped without injury.

Kaura warned motorists about the dangers of speeding, especially on hilly and sloping roads, urging drivers to maintain controllable speeds and ensure their vehicles are in proper working condition before long journeys — advice he stressed is particularly crucial during the peak festive travel period.

The FRSC regularly issues similar warnings as part of its annual “Arrive Alive” yuletide safety campaign, which highlights excessive speed and poor vehicle maintenance as leading contributors to road accidents nationwide during holiday travel seasons a pattern confirmed by broader traffic-fatality data.

The tragic crash underscores ongoing concerns over road safety in Nigeria, especially on rural and inter-city routes with challenging terrain and increased traffic volumes during holidays. Families of the deceased are mourning their loss even as national calls for heightened enforcement of traffic laws and improved transport infrastructure continue to grow.
