The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has intensified political pressure on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by demanding an immediate investigation into alleged manipulation of Nigeria’s newly enacted tax laws and warning that impeachment proceedings should begin if evidence emerges linking him to the alleged misconduct.

In a statement issued Monday and signed by PRP National Chairman Falalu Bello, the opposition party accused the executive arm of government of tampering with tax legislation after it had been approved by the National Assembly, describing such actions as a “serious threat to constitutional order” and a “reckless disdain for the rule of law.

The PRP’s complaint stems from claims made in the National Assembly including by a House lawmaker — that the versions of key tax reform bills gazetted and signed into law by the President differ materially from the versions passed by both chambers of the legislature. According to the party, the alleged insertion, deletion and modification of substantive provisions without legislative consent undermines the separation of powers and violates Nigeria’s constitutional framework.

“This audacious act of executive dishonesty … underscores a reckless disdain for the rule of law, separation of powers, and the constitutional order,” the PRP said in its release, describing the conduct as a “direct attack on the independence of the legislature and the constitutional rights of Nigerians to transparent and accountable governance.

As part of its demands, the PRP wants a comprehensive, transparent investigation to identify and punish all those responsible for the alleged alterations. The party insists that the disputed tax laws be suspended immediately until discrepancies between the versions passed by the National Assembly and those ultimately gazetted and signed into law are resolved.

Most significantly, the PRP stated that if evidence implicates President Tinubu in illegal post-passage alterations, it should trigger impeachment proceedings “without delay,” asserting that no individual including the President should be above the law.

The party also warned it will seek judicial intervention to halt enforcement of the tax laws and pursue appropriate legal redress if the matter is not addressed promptly.

The controversy has drawn broader public and civil-society interest, with other groups such as the League of Northern Democrats also urging the National Assembly to investigate and, if allegations are upheld, commence impeachment proceedings under Section 143 of the Constitution.

As Nigeria prepares for the new tax regime to take effect in January 2026, the brewing political and legal battle over alleged post-passage alterations to the laws threatens to further polarise national discourse on governance, transparency, and constitutional accountability.
