Over 27,000 Canadian Public Servants Earned $150,000+ in 2024–25, Treasury Board Data Show

Ottawa — December 4, 2025 | Dalena Reporters

Recent data released by the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat and tabled in Parliament reveal that in the 2024–25 fiscal year, more than 27,000 federal public servants received total compensation — including salary, bonuses, benefits and overtime — of at least CA$150,000

Of that number: over 20,000 earned between CA$150,000 and CA$199,999. Meanwhile, nearly 5,000 pulled in between CA$200,000 and CA$249,999, and about 1,400 had incomes ranging from CA$250,000 to CA$299,999

A smaller segment received even higher compensation: 654 employees earned between CA$300,000 and CA$399,999, 42 took home between CA$400,000 and CA$499,999, and 6 public servants had total compensation of CA$500,000 or more

The disclosure comes as the federal government implements a major austerity plan aiming to reduce program spending and cut administrative costs by CA$60 billion over five years. As part of these measures, the government plans to shrink the public workforce by 10% by 2029 — roughly 40,000 positions — and eliminate around 1,000 executive roles over the next two years.

The data raise questions about remuneration levels in the federal civil service, especially at a time when Canadians face rising costs and when the government calls for fiscal restraint. As the debate intensifies, many Canadians may be watching closely to see whether proposed job cuts and cost-saving measures will translate into tangible relief for taxpayers.
