Northern Christian elders have responded to the reported United States military strikes on terrorist elements in Nigeria, saying the country desperately needs all available help to end the worsening insecurity that has plagued communities for years, Vanguard reported. The Chairman of the Northern States Christian Elders Forum (NOSCEF), Elder Sunday Oibe, said critics who oppose foreign military involvement overlook the severity of the nation’s security crisis and the urgent need for decisive action.

Speaking amid heated debate over the US-backed strikes targeting extremist groups across northern Nigeria, Elder Oibe stressed that Nigeria is facing an “existential security crisis” marked by insurgency, banditry, kidnappings and terrorism that have caused immense suffering. He said that any assistance that helps curb the violence should be welcomed, provided the Nigerian government is fully aware of and involved in the process.

“There’s no gain saying that Nigeria needs help to curb this madness of insurgency, kidnapping and terrorism troubling the soul of this nation,” Oibe said, urging Nigerians to focus on protecting lives rather than contesting the nationality of those offering help. He argued that the identity of external support whether American, Indian or from any other nation — should not be a barrier if it contributes to peace and security.

Elder Oibe aligned his position with that of former Head of State General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), emphasising that militant violence must be confronted decisively and without compromise. He also referenced recent attacks on civilians, including bombings of worshippers in Maiduguri, to underline the proliferation of violence that Nigerians endure.

The remarks reflect broader national discussions on how best to address Nigeria’s long-running security challenges and the role of international cooperation amid ongoing operations with foreign partners. While supporters argue that collaborative action can bolster efforts to dismantle extremist networks, others raise caution over the implications for national sovereignty and long-term strategic independence.
