Operatives of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State, Nigeria Command, have arrested two women for allegedly attempting to smuggle illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Goron Dutse, Kano State. The arrests were made during routine security checks at the facility on Sunday, December 21, 2025

The suspects 19‑year‑old Maryam Ali and 20‑year‑old Hauwa Musa, both residents of Kano State were intercepted while trying to gain access to the prison with substances believed to be illicit drugs. Preliminary investigations indicate the drugs were intended for distribution to inmates inside the custodial centre. Their plan was uncovered during standard screening procedures designed to prevent the introduction of prohibited items into detention facilities.

The command’s spokesperson, Mr. Musbahu Lawan, described the act as a serious violation of Nigerian Correctional Service regulations and a punishable criminal offence under Nigerian law, stressing the service’s commitment to maintaining strict security and discipline within custodial centres.

Following their arrest, the suspects were reportedly handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and appropriate legal action. The NDLEA and other security agencies have been credited with numerous interdictions in Kano as part of ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking and related criminal activities in the state.

The incident highlights the persistent challenge of contraband smuggling into correctional facilities and underscores the vigilance of prison security personnel in thwarting such attempts ahead of the peak festive season, when supply channels to inmates often become more active.
