The Enugu State Government has approved the construction and reconstruction of 1,022 urban roads as part of Governor Peter Mbah’s administration’s target to pave all roads in the metropolis before the end of his first term. This decision was announced at the conclusion of the Enugu State Executive Council meeting over the weekend.
Briefing correspondents at Government House, Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure Engr. Osita Okoh explained that the massive project will take advantage of the dry season, with contracts to be awarded early and contractors mobilized from January 2026. Okoh noted that the first two phases, covering over 231 roads, had been successfully executed, and the third phase will now cover all remaining urban roads.
“These roads cut across New GRA, Old GRA, Emene Zone, Abakpa Zone, Thinkers Corner, Airport Corner, Upper Meniru, Idaw River Layout, Gariki, Maryland, Achara Layout, Uwani, One Day and Upper One Day, Trans Ekulu, Independence Layout, Independence Layout Phase II, Coal Camp Zone, Pocket Layout, Ogui, and Asata Zone, among other areas,” Okoh said, emphasizing the government’s commitment to comprehensive urban infrastructure development.
Commissioner for Information and Communication Dr. Malachy Agbo and Commissioner for Trade, Investment and Industry Dr. Sam Ogbu-Nwobodo highlighted that the Executive Council also approved the Business Enabling Reform Action Plan for 2026, aimed at enhancing Enugu’s business-friendly ecosystem. Dr. Ogbu-Nwobodo said the state had leapt from 36th to 6th position in the national ease of doing business rankings, fostering greater investment inflow and private-sector engagement.
The government emphasized that the road projects, alongside reforms to improve transparency, predictability in land administration, tax systems, permits, and business-to-government interfaces, are intended to stimulate economic activity and improve citizens’ quality of life.
Construction work is set to commence in early 2026, with officials pledging timely completion, high-quality standards, and minimal disruption to residents. The initiative underscores Enugu State’s focus on infrastructure-led development, urban renewal, and creating a conducive environment for investment and social progress.
