The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has called on the United States and the broader international community to launch an independent inquiry into what it describes as continuing ethno-religious killings and insecurity in Igboland, the south-eastern region of Nigeria.
In a statement signed by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, IPOB asserted that the U.S. government’s recent designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) for religious freedom violations should be followed by concrete action: an impartial investigation to identify “the perpetrators, financiers, and political enablers” of violence against Igbo and Christian populations.
IPOB described the U.S. classification as a moral victory, declaring that it “exposed the Nigerian state’s complicity in ethnic and religious violence.” The group expressed deep appreciation to former U.S. President Donald Trump, Senator Ted Cruz and other American advocates for bringing global attention to what IPOB labelled “persecution of Christians and Igbos.
The statement urged the international investigators to examine not only violent attacks but also the structural factors behind insecurity in Igboland, including alleged state inaction, land seizures, and targeted displacements of Christian-Igbo farmers. IPOB warned that without such inquiry, justice will remain elusive and the cycle of violence unbroken.
IPOB also called for the involvement of human-rights organisations and foreign-governments in monitoring any probe, arguing that Nigeria’s domestic institutions lack the impartiality or capacity to fully investigate the claims. The group emphasised that any findings should be made public and should lead to accountability for identified perpetrators and enablers.
