The incumbent governor of Anambra State, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has maintained a commanding lead in the ongoing governorship election as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) continues to collate official results from across the state.
According to official figures published by INEC on Saturday night, Soludo emerged victorious in 19 out of the 21 local government areas of the state, placing him far ahead of his closest rivals from the major opposition parties.
The APGA candidate recorded sweeping victories in several of his party’s traditional strongholds, including Awka South, Aguata, Njikoka, Anaocha, Oyi, Nnewi North, and Dunukofia Local Government Areas.
Early collation data show that Soludo’s wide margin was sustained in both rural and urban centres, reflecting consistent voter support despite reports of low turnout and technical hitches in a few polling stations.
INEC officials confirmed that the results from 99 percent of polling units had already been uploaded to the commission’s Result Viewing (IReV) portal, while final collation was taking place at the state collation centre in Awka under tight security.
His closest challenger, the candidate of the Labour Party (LP), followed in a distant second position, securing only two local government areas according to figures available at press time. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) trailed further behind, unable to secure major wins across most of the state’s councils.
Although official confirmation of the winner has not yet been declared, observers say Soludo’s overwhelming lead makes a runoff highly unlikely.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Anambra State reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to transparency, assuring party agents, journalists, and election observers that the final results would be declared only after due verification and collation from all local government areas.
Security personnel were also deployed around the state collation centre to ensure order as party representatives and observers monitored the process late into the night.
Despite Soludo’s lead, the election recorded low voter turnout in several polling units, attributed to voter apathy, insecurity fears, and logistical delays. Some areas also experienced technical difficulties with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), which temporarily slowed accreditation and voting in certain wards.
Nevertheless, election observers commended the relatively peaceful conduct of the exercise compared to previous elections in the state, noting that incidents of violence or disruption were minimal.
Awaiting Final Declaration
As of press time, INEC was yet to make a formal announcement of the winner, though the outcome appears to heavily favour Governor Soludo’s re-election bid. The Commission is expected to conclude final collation and make an official declaration within hours.
