Man “Urinates” on Sacred Vatican Altar in Front of Horrified Tourists (Video)

Vatican City — October 10, 2025 – In a shocking incident that left hundreds of visitors stunned, a man reportedly climbed past security barriers inside St. Peter’s Basilica and urinated on the Altar of Confession, one of the holiest and most sacred places within the Vatican.

According to reports from Corriere della Sera and eyewitnesses, the man breached turnstile controls around 9:30 a.m. local time, climbed the steps to the altar area, and committed the act in full view of worshippers and tourists.

Before arrest, he allegedly made an obscene gesture toward the crowd. Plainclothes Vatican security forces intervened quickly, apprehending him at the site.

Witnesses described the scene as deeply disturbing. Some averted their eyes, while others captured video in disbelief.

Reactions & Responses

  • Vatican Officials: They announced that steps would be taken to “reconsecrate” the altar, considering the severity of the act and the sacredness of the spot believed to lie directly above the tomb of Saint Peter.

  • Outrage Online: Many devout Catholics and observers on social media expressed sorrow, anger, and disappointment at how open access to holy spaces may lead to lapses in respect. One comment read:

  • “Maybe it’s time to stop turning cathedrals into tourist attractions and enforce proper conduct.”

  • Historical Context: This isn’t the first time St. Peter’s Basilica has faced such disruptions. In 2023, a man jumped onto an altar with “Save children of Ukraine” painted across his body, and earlier this year someone vandalized parts of the sanctuary.

Ongoing Investigation & Next Steps

  • The suspect’s identity has not yet been released. Italian police, in collaboration with Vatican security, are investigating.

  • The Basilica was temporarily closed for cleaning and a security review following the incident.

  • The Vatican likely will reassert stricter protocols in the aftermath—adjusting access, intensifying surveillance, and reinforcing sacred boundaries.
