The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has again adjourned the trial of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, after directing the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to submit a medical report on his health condition before the next hearing.
The case, which was scheduled to continue on Wednesday, was postponed to October 16, 2025, following the court’s insistence on receiving a comprehensive medical evaluation from the NMA.
Kanu’s lead counsel, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed the development, stating that the adjournment was necessary for the court to obtain the official medical assessment that would determine his client’s fitness to stand trial.
“The court has asked the NMA to provide the medical report before proceeding with the matter,” Ejimakor said.
The decision comes barely 24 hours after IPOB rejected a purported medical report allegedly prepared by the NMA, describing it as invalid and manipulated. The group warned that any attempt to tender such a report in court would amount to “executive deception” and a violation of Kanu’s right to fair hearing.
IPOB had earlier accused the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) of influencing the medical process, insisting that the report was not conducted under judicial supervision as ordered by the court.
“We call on the court to ensure transparency and uphold justice in handling our leader’s health matters,” the group stated in its release.
The new directive by the court signals that the authenticity of the medical report will play a major role in determining how Kanu’s trial proceeds.
Kanu has been in the custody of the DSS since his extraordinary rendition from Kenya in 2021, facing multiple charges related to treasonable felony and alleged incitement.
