A Cranbrook, B.C., man is now facing a second-degree murder charge in connection with the death of a 23-year-old Calgary woman found on a city pathway last December.
Nehemiah Walter John Oslund, 29, was initially charged with manslaughter in August, following an eight-month investigation.
That charge was formally upgraded to second-degree murder during a court appearance on Monday, Sept. 22.
Jelisa Maschki, 23, was found with life-threatening injuries on the Nose Creek Pathway in northeast Calgary early on Dec. 9, 2024.
She was reportedly taken to hospital and remained on life support until her passing two days later.
Police believe she was assaulted sometime between 9 and 11 p.m. the night before, following what investigators described as a brief interaction with Oslund.
Maschki and Oslund are not believed to have known eachother.
Oslund was arrested in Cranbrook and later transported to Calgary, where he is reportedly being held at the Calgary Remand Centre.
He appeared in court via CCTV.
The case remains before the courts.
