A 40-year-old woman and two young girls were killed in a serious three-vehicle collision near Foam Lake, Saskatchewan, on Friday, while four other people were injured and a U.S. man has been charged in connection with the crash, police said.
Wadena RCMP responded to the collision on a grid road approximately nine kilometres west of Foam Lake shortly after 12:30 p.m. on October 2. Emergency crews, including the Wadena Volunteer Fire Department and STARS Air Ambulance, attended the scene. The road was initially closed while investigators examined the crash.
According to the RCMP's preliminary investigation, a pickup truck was attempting to pass a semi-truck when it collided with an SUV. The SUV contained four people. The 40-year-old woman driving the vehicle and two passengers, an eight-year-old girl and a five-year-old girl, were pronounced dead at the scene. All three victims were from Foam Lake.
A fourth person travelling in the SUV, an adult man, survived the collision but suffered serious injuries. He was airlifted from the scene to hospital by STARS Air Ambulance.
The pickup truck also had three occupants. The driver and one passenger suffered injuries that police described as non-life-threatening and were taken to hospital. A second passenger sustained serious injuries and was transported by STARS.
The driver of the semi-truck was not physically injured, and police said the semi itself was not damaged in the collision.
Following the initial investigation, RCMP arrested a 40-year-old man from Sumter, South Carolina. He has been charged with three counts of dangerous driving causing death and three counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm. He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Yorkton Provincial Court on October 5.
The charges have not been proven in court.
The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation. Wadena RCMP are working with a Saskatchewan RCMP collision reconstructionist as investigators continue to examine the sequence of events leading to the fatal collision.
The crash has left the Foam Lake community mourning the deaths of the woman and two children, while authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision and the injuries suffered by the other people involved.
The RCMP has not released further information about the identities of the victims or the injured individuals.
