Nine people were killed in a mass shooting in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Friday, including the suspected shooter, authorities said, as investigators continued working to determine what led to the deadly attack.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro confirmed the death toll on Saturday and said he had offered the full support of his administration to Erie Mayor Daria Devlin following the shooting. The city of Erie said late Friday that the suspected shooter was dead and that there was no longer a threat to the public.

Police were called to a residence in Erie at about 5 p.m. Friday after reports of gunfire. According to authorities and local reporting, officers arriving at the scene found two women who had been fatally shot outside the home. The suspected gunman then barricaded himself inside the residence, leading to a standoff involving Erie police and tactical officers.

Additional gunfire was heard from inside the house during the standoff. When officers eventually entered the residence, they discovered additional victims as well as the suspected shooter. Authorities said the suspect appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The total of nine people killed includes the suspected shooter. Police and the city have not yet publicly identified the victims, and investigators have not established a motive for the attack. The identities and relationships among the victims were also not immediately disclosed by authorities.

Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah described the scene as deeply disturbing and said he had not witnessed anything comparable during his more than 28 years of service. He said the loss of life was devastating and that investigators needed time to establish the full circumstances of what happened.

Authorities have emphasized that there is no continuing danger to the public. The city of Erie also urged residents to rely on verified information as investigators work to determine exactly how the shooting unfolded.

The shooting occurred in Erie, a city in northwestern Pennsylvania located about 188 kilometres north of Pittsburgh. The incident has prompted a major investigation as police work to reconstruct the sequence of events inside and outside the residence and determine what may have motivated the violence.

Gov. Shapiro said his administration would support local authorities as the investigation continues. He also expressed support for the victims, their families and the wider Erie community following the tragedy.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, and authorities have not released additional details about the suspected gunman or a possible motive. Further information is expected as investigators continue interviewing witnesses, examining evidence and reconstructing the events that resulted in nine deaths.
