The husband of U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar was seen returning to the couple’s Washington, D.C., residence Tuesday, one day after federal Homeland Security Investigations agents searched the property as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.

Tim Mynett, a political consultant and Omar’s husband, was photographed and recorded by Fox News Digital walking along the street with a yellow Labrador before entering the residence. His appearance came as scrutiny surrounding the Minnesota Democrat intensified following the federal search and a separate announcement that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington is examining Omar’s financial disclosures.

The Justice Department has confirmed that HSI executed a judicially authorized search warrant at the Washington-area home on Monday. Officials have not publicly disclosed the full details of the investigation, but sources cited by Fox News said it concerns alleged fraud involving immigration paperwork completed by Omar’s late father when she was a child.

The development represents a significant escalation in a controversy that has surrounded Omar for years. The Democratic congresswoman, who represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, has faced repeated political attacks concerning her immigration history and personal finances. However, the existence of an investigation does not establish that Omar committed a crime, and authorities have not announced criminal charges against her.

Husband caught in renewed scrutiny

Mynett has become an important figure in questions surrounding Omar’s financial disclosures because several business interests connected to him underwent dramatic changes in reported valuations.

According to Fox News, an earlier 2024 disclosure estimated the couple’s combined assets at between approximately $6 million and $30 million. Mynett’s reported interests included a winery valued between $1 million and $5 million and an interest in a venture-capital advisory firm valued between $5 million and $25 million. In subsequent filings, those interests were reported at zero.

Omar’s office previously explained that the earlier filing mistakenly reflected the total equity of the businesses rather than Mynett’s individual ownership interests. The office also said the original disclosure did not properly account for liabilities.

The financial questions gained additional attention Tuesday when U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said her office was investigating Omar’s financial disclosures. The announcement followed a separate congressional ethics matter that had been closed in September.

It remains unclear whether the financial-disclosure investigation is connected to Monday’s HSI search. Fox News reported that the two matters are being treated as separate investigations, and no public evidence has established a connection between them.

Immigration investigation remains unclear

The federal search is reportedly focused on immigration paperwork associated with Omar’s arrival in the United States as a child. Sources told Fox News that the documents were completed by her late father.

Omar was born in Somalia and came to the United States with her family as a child before eventually becoming a U.S. citizen and entering national politics. She was first elected to Congress in 2018 and became the first Somali-American member of the U.S. House.

The Justice Department has not publicly provided the evidence underlying the investigation. A department spokesperson said only that the search warrant was obtained through the courts and that the operation formed part of an ongoing federal investigation.

White House border czar Tom Homan previously confirmed that a criminal investigation involving Omar was underway but declined to provide specific details.

The renewed investigation has also revived longstanding allegations concerning Omar’s first marriage and immigration history. Those allegations have circulated publicly for years, but they remain disputed and should not be treated as established facts. Legal experts have also questioned whether some of the older allegations could still be prosecuted because of potential statute-of-limitations issues.

Omar denounces the federal action

Omar has rejected accusations of wrongdoing and has portrayed the federal investigation as part of a broader political campaign against her.

The congresswoman has been one of President Donald Trump’s most outspoken Democratic critics, making her a frequent target of attacks from Trump and his political allies. Following Monday’s search, Omar said she would not be intimidated or silenced.

The timing has also generated controversy because the federal action occurred only weeks before the November midterm elections. Democratic officials and civil-rights advocates have questioned whether the investigation and search could have political implications, while federal officials maintain that the warrant was judicially authorized.

The Washington Post reported that legal experts have urged caution because publicly available information does not yet establish precisely what federal investigators are seeking or whether prosecutors have sufficient evidence to bring charges.

A growing political and legal controversy

The investigation places Omar at the center of several overlapping controversies involving immigration, financial disclosures and her political relationship with the Trump administration.

The congresswoman has repeatedly been the subject of claims regarding her immigration history, including allegations surrounding her first marriage. Omar has denied wrongdoing, while no public court finding has established the allegations as fact.

Her husband, meanwhile, has faced scrutiny because of the changing valuations of his business interests reported in Omar’s congressional disclosures. Mynett previously worked for a political consulting firm that was involved with Omar’s 2020 reelection campaign, and the couple announced their marriage in 2020.

The financial investigation announced by Pirro could add another layer of scrutiny if investigators determine that the congressional disclosures contained inaccurate or misleading information. At present, however, the mere existence of an investigation does not mean that a violation occurred.

For federal investigators, the more immediate issue appears to be the immigration-related criminal investigation that prompted Monday’s search. Authorities have not disclosed what evidence was collected from the residence, whether additional people are targets of the investigation, or whether Omar herself has been formally accused of a crime.

No charges announced

As of Tuesday, no criminal charges had been announced against Omar or Mynett in connection with the HSI search.

The Justice Department has confirmed the search warrant and the existence of an ongoing federal investigation, but the government has not publicly detailed the alleged offense beyond descriptions of the matter as a criminal investigation.

The appearance of Mynett at the residence Tuesday therefore does not by itself indicate that he is a suspect or that he has been accused of wrongdoing. His presence at the property came amid an unusually intense period of political and legal scrutiny surrounding the couple.

The investigation is expected to attract continued national attention as federal authorities determine whether the allegations involving Omar’s immigration paperwork warrant further legal action. Meanwhile, the separate examination of her financial disclosures could broaden the scrutiny surrounding the congresswoman and her husband.

For now, the central questions remain unresolved: what investigators were seeking during the HSI search, what evidence they obtained, whether the financial inquiry is connected to the immigration investigation, and whether prosecutors will ultimately bring charges.

Until federal authorities release additional information or file formal charges, allegations surrounding Omar, her husband and their financial and immigration histories remain matters under investigation rather than established criminal findings.
