Eleven people, including a police officer, were taken to hospital after an apartment fire broke out early Monday morning in Mississauga, Ontario, with police saying the blaze is being investigated as a suspected case of arson.
Emergency crews were called to a building in the area of Inverhouse Drive and Lakeshore Road West at around 3 a.m. after a fire broke out in a hallway. Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services said crews rescued 16 residents from units on the third and fourth floors.
Ryan Baird, deputy chief with Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services, said the fire was brought under control and that some residents were later allowed to return to their apartments. Residents on the third floor, however, were not expected to be able to return for some time because of the damage caused by the fire.
Peel Regional Police said the fire is suspected to have been deliberately set. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the blaze, which occurred in a building where firefighters had already responded to multiple fire incidents in recent days.
Fire officials said another fire had occurred on the same floor on Sunday. The repeated incidents have prompted investigators to examine whether the fires are connected.
Peel paramedics transported 11 people to hospital. Two people suffered serious but non-life-threatening burns, while eight others were treated for minor smoke inhalation. Several other people were treated at the scene.
Among those transported to hospital was a police officer. Peel police said the officer's injuries were unrelated to the fire. One firefighter also suffered minor injuries while battling the blaze.
The Ontario Fire Marshal has been notified and will be involved in the investigation. Police and fire officials are continuing to determine how the latest fire started and whether the earlier incidents at the building are connected.
The incident comes as authorities continue to investigate a series of fires at the same building. Residents affected by the latest blaze have been receiving assistance as officials assess the condition of the damaged units and determine when it will be safe for people to return.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not announced any arrests or charges in connection with the suspected arson.
