Four people were killed Saturday after a helicopter crashed and caught fire in Sainte-Brigide-d’Iberville, about 50 kilometres southeast of Montreal, Quebec provincial police said.
The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) said emergency services were called shortly after 2:30 p.m. following reports that a helicopter had crashed near Rang des Écossais, in the area of Highway 10. The aircraft came down in a field and caught fire after the crash.
Firefighters responded to the scene and brought the blaze under control within approximately an hour. All four occupants were pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
The victims had not been publicly identified as of Saturday evening, and authorities had not released information about their ages or identities. Police also had not determined what caused the helicopter to crash.
Police said the helicopter appeared to be a private aircraft. A provincial police spokesperson also indicated that the aircraft may have experienced difficulties before the crash, although investigators had not established the precise circumstances leading up to the incident.
The SQ's Major Crimes Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has also been notified and sent investigators to the crash site as part of the investigation into the aviation accident.
Authorities have not said whether the fire began before the helicopter struck the ground or resulted from the impact. Investigators are expected to examine the wreckage and surrounding area as they work to determine what happened before the crash.
The incident occurred in Sainte-Brigide-d’Iberville, a municipality in Quebec’s Montérégie region southeast of Montreal. The investigation remains ongoing, and police have not yet released further details about the four people who died.
