MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — Officials in Mississauga are considering renaming a neighbourhood park in honour of fallen Toronto Police Service Constable Marc Pinizzotto, a move intended to recognize both his public service and his longstanding connection to the local community.
The proposal, expected to go before city council this week, would see Indian Gate Park in Mississauga’s Lorne Park neighbourhood renamed after Pinizzotto, who was fatally shot while on duty during a police operation connected to an ongoing investigation. The initiative has been backed by Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish and Ward 2 Councillor Alvin Tedjo.
Pinizzotto, 43, was a veteran officer with the Toronto Police Service and served for 18 years, including time with the Emergency Task Force. According to police, he was killed while officers executed coordinated high-risk search warrants connected to several active investigations.
Supporters of the renaming proposal say the park carries personal significance for the officer and his family. Officials noted that Pinizzotto and his brothers spent time at the park while growing up in the area, making the location a symbolic choice for memorial recognition.
The proposal comes during a period of mourning across Ontario law enforcement communities. Pinizzotto’s death marked the second on-duty police death in the province within a short period and prompted public tributes from municipal leaders, colleagues, and residents.
In recent days, public processions and memorial events have been held to honour the officer’s service. Toronto police described him as a dedicated member of the service whose work reflected years of commitment to public safety and emergency response.
If approved, the renaming would become part of Mississauga’s formal commemorative process and would permanently associate the neighbourhood landmark with Pinizzotto’s legacy. Similar discussions have also emerged elsewhere in Ontario as communities consider ways to recognize public servants who died while performing their duties.
The council decision is expected at a special meeting scheduled for Wednesday. For many residents, the discussion extends beyond a name change and reflects a broader effort to commemorate service, sacrifice, and local community ties.
