MEXICO CITY — Mexican authorities have opened an investigation following the killing of a municipal mayor in the southern state of Oaxaca, adding to growing concerns over violence targeting public officials across the country.
According to Reuters, the victim was Lilia Gema García Soto, mayor of San Mateo Piñas in Oaxaca State. Authorities said she was killed on Friday after armed attackers entered the municipal government building and opened fire. Another local official was also reported killed during the incident.
The Oaxaca state prosecutor’s office announced that an official investigation had been launched to determine those responsible and establish a motive behind the attack. Security personnel were deployed to support investigative efforts and reinforce public safety in the area following the shooting.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the killing and said federal authorities would coordinate with state investigators. Government officials described the incident as part of broader security challenges affecting local governance structures in some regions of the country.
Political violence has remained a significant issue in Mexico in recent years, particularly at the municipal level where local officials often operate in environments affected by organized crime, territorial disputes, and limited security resources. Analysts have noted that mayors and local officeholders can face elevated risks because of their direct influence over local administration and public spending.
The killing has renewed debate over the protection of elected officials and the broader challenge of strengthening public security across Mexico’s regional governments. Authorities have not announced arrests as of publication, and investigations remain ongoing.
