At least many people have been killed and five travellers abducted following a fresh terrorist attack along the Okoloke–Isanlu Esa road in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, deepening concerns over growing insecurity along major transportation routes in Nigeria’s North-Central region.
According to reports from local sources, the attack occurred on Monday when Fulani armed assailants ambushed travellers along the highway, opening fire before seizing several victims and fleeing into nearby forested areas. Residents said the incident caused panic among commuters and communities located along the route.
Community members reported that two individuals lost their lives during the attack, while at least five others were forcibly taken away by the gunmen. The identities of the victims had not been officially released at the time of reporting.
The latest incident adds to a series of security breaches recorded in Kogi State in recent months, particularly in Yagba West and surrounding areas where kidnappings, highway ambushes, and attacks on rural communities have become increasingly frequent. Security analysts have repeatedly warned that criminal and terrorist groups are exploiting forest corridors that connect parts of Kogi, Kwara, and neighbouring states to carry out abductions and other violent crimes.
Residents have called on the federal and state governments to strengthen security presence along vulnerable road networks and improve surveillance in rural areas. Community leaders have also urged security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the abducted victims and prevent further attacks.
The attack comes amid growing concerns over the safety of motorists travelling through parts of Kogi State, where several similar incidents involving commercial vehicles and private travellers have been reported this year. Security forces have conducted operations in some affected areas, but residents say more sustained action is needed to address the threat posed by armed groups operating within the region.
As of the time of publication, security authorities had not released detailed information regarding ongoing rescue efforts or possible arrests connected to the attack. Investigations are expected to continue as authorities work to locate the abducted travellers and identify those responsible for the assault.
