KATSINA, Nigeria — At least seven local security volunteers, including two members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), were killed during a fierce gun battle with suspected bandits who attempted to overrun Ketare town in Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The attack, which occurred on Sunday evening, saw heavily armed bandits storm the community in what residents described as another coordinated assault on rural settlements plagued by persistent insecurity. However, the attackers encountered stiff resistance from local vigilante groups and CJTF personnel, leading to an intense exchange of gunfire that reportedly forced the assailants to retreat.

Despite successfully preventing the attackers from taking control of the town, the local defenders suffered significant casualties. Reports indicate that seven vigilantes lost their lives during the confrontation, including two members of the CJTF who had joined the operation to defend the community.

Security analyst Bakatsine, who disclosed details of the incident on Monday, said the attackers failed to accomplish their mission but left behind a trail of grief.

According to him, the bandits launched the offensive under the cover of darkness but were met by determined local defenders who engaged them in a prolonged firefight until the attackers withdrew from the area.

While the community escaped occupation, the heavy loss of lives has cast a shadow over what would otherwise have been considered a successful defence against the armed assailants.

The incident once again highlights the growing reliance on community-based security groups in parts of northwestern Nigeria, where vigilantes and CJTF members frequently complement conventional security forces in responding to bandit attacks. These volunteers often confront heavily armed criminal gangs despite limited resources and significant personal risk.

Residents said the fallen defenders paid the ultimate price while protecting their families and neighbours from another violent raid that could have resulted in greater civilian casualties and widespread destruction.

Katsina State has remained one of the regions most affected by banditry, with armed groups carrying out repeated attacks on rural communities, killing residents, abducting victims for ransom, and rustling livestock. Although security operations have intensified across the state, many remote communities continue to experience recurring assaults.

Security experts argue that while the courage displayed by local vigilante groups has helped repel several attacks, the continued loss of volunteer defenders underscores the urgent need for stronger intelligence gathering, improved security presence, and sustained military operations to dismantle armed criminal networks operating across the North-West.

Authorities had not issued an official casualty update at the time of reporting, while security agencies continue efforts to track the fleeing attackers and prevent further assaults in the area.
