LOKOJA, Nigeria — The Kogi State Police Command has launched a homicide investigation following the death of a 30-year-old teacher who reportedly succumbed to injuries days after she was allegedly assaulted by the parent of a pupil she had disciplined at a private school in Olamaboro Local Government Area.
The deceased, identified as Maryam Usman, was a staff member at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka, Okpo District. According to police, the incident occurred on June 18, when a man identified as Abdullahi Ishaka, accompanied by two women, allegedly stormed the school and attacked the teacher over disciplinary action she had taken against a pupil.
Police spokesperson ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat said the case was formally reported to the Olamaboro Divisional Police Headquarters on June 25, following Usman's death. Preliminary investigations indicate that she sustained severe injuries during the assault and was initially treated at a hospital in Ugbamaka before being referred to Iko-Ojo Hospital in Okpo, where her condition deteriorated. She later died from her injuries.
Following the report, police officers visited both the scene of the alleged assault and the deceased's residence to document evidence. Authorities said the victim's body would be transferred to the General Hospital in Ankpa for an autopsy and further medical examination.
According to the police, the suspects fled before officers arrived at the scene. A manhunt has been launched, and authorities said the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive investigation once the suspects are apprehended.
The incident has generated widespread public outrage, with many expressing concern over the growing number of attacks on teachers by parents and guardians in disputes arising from disciplinary actions in schools. The case has also renewed calls for stronger legal protections for educators carrying out their professional responsibilities.
The Kogi State Police Command has assured the public that efforts are ongoing to arrest all those involved and bring them to justice, urging anyone with useful information to assist investigators.
