HEARST, Ontario — An Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was killed in the line of duty during an investigation in northern Ontario, prompting an outpouring of condolences from officials and renewed attention on the dangers faced by frontline officers across the province.
Police identified the fallen officer as Provincial Constable Tarun Bali, 29, who was assigned to the OPP’s Dufferin Detachment and deployed with the James Bay Detachment at the time of the incident. Authorities said the events unfolded Tuesday afternoon near the community of Hearst, approximately 520 kilometres east of Thunder Bay.
According to OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique, officers had been attempting to safely locate and apprehend an 18-year-old suspect who had reportedly escaped from a hospital where he was undergoing assessment under Ontario’s Mental Health Act. During the operation, investigators allege the suspect drove a vehicle that struck Const. Bali. He later died from his injuries.

Authorities announced that 18-year-old Justin Veronneau has been arrested and faces charges including first-degree murder, dangerous driving, and flight from police. Police stated that the investigation remains active and that charges could evolve as more evidence becomes available. The accused appeared in court in Cochrane and was remanded into custody, with a subsequent appearance scheduled later this month.
Commissioner Carrique described Bali as a dedicated officer whose commitment to service left a lasting impression on colleagues and community members. Speaking publicly after meeting with the officer’s family, Carrique reflected on Bali’s lifelong ambition to serve, recalling a family photograph showing him saluting as a young child.
Tributes quickly emerged from across Ontario’s political and policing communities. Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed condolences to Bali’s family, friends, and fellow officers, while police leaders from multiple services offered support and recognition of his service and sacrifice.
The death marks another difficult period for the Ontario Provincial Police, coming weeks after the loss of another officer in an unrelated incident. Officials said the case is being investigated by the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch in collaboration with the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
The OPP Association also issued a statement expressing support for Bali’s family and colleagues, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the risks officers encounter while carrying out their duties to protect communities across the province.
