PORT-AU-PRINCE — Haitian authorities have launched an investigation following reports that a senior defence official was abducted in the capital, Port-au-Prince, in an incident that has renewed concerns over the country’s worsening security environment and the growing reach of armed groups.
According to Reuters, the official involved was identified as Colonel Himmler Rébu, Haiti’s Secretary of State for Defence and a former army officer with a longstanding public role in national security matters. Reports indicated that armed individuals intercepted him in Port-au-Prince before taking him to an undisclosed location.
Government officials said security agencies had begun efforts to verify details surrounding the incident and support investigative operations. Authorities did not immediately disclose additional information regarding potential suspects or motives.
The reported abduction comes as Haiti continues to face severe instability driven by armed groups that have expanded influence across large parts of the capital and surrounding regions. International organizations have repeatedly warned that insecurity has disrupted public services, displaced residents, and complicated governance efforts.
In recent months, Haiti’s transitional authorities have worked alongside international partners to restore order and strengthen institutional capacity, but violence and kidnappings remain major concerns. Security incidents involving public officials are viewed as especially significant because they highlight the challenges facing state institutions amid ongoing instability.
Analysts note that attacks targeting government personnel can carry broader political implications, particularly at a time when Haiti is attempting to stabilize governance structures and improve security conditions ahead of future political transitions.
As of publication, authorities had not announced any arrests or publicly confirmed the official’s condition. Investigations remain ongoing while government agencies continue response efforts.
