ABUJA, Nigeria — Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised the Federal Government’s response to the ongoing abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, arguing that families are seeking the safe return of their loved ones rather than relief materials while they remain in captivity.
The criticism followed reports that food items and financial support were distributed to some affected families as authorities continued rescue efforts for victims abducted during attacks on schools in Oyo State. Atiku argued that humanitarian gestures should not replace urgent action focused on securing the release of those still missing.
In a public reaction, Atiku called for greater urgency and accountability from the administration of President Bola Tinubu, saying government attention should remain centred on bringing the children back safely rather than symbolic interventions.
The controversy comes amid growing public concern over renewed attacks targeting educational institutions in parts of Nigeria. Recent incidents involving school communities in Oyo and Borno states have intensified national conversations about student safety and the effectiveness of security responses.
President Tinubu had earlier stated that abducted children and teachers had not been forgotten and pledged continued rescue operations coordinated through security agencies. The President also announced plans to strengthen school protection measures, improve early warning systems, and expand implementation of the Safe Schools framework in vulnerable areas.
Families of affected pupils and teachers have continued to appeal for faster intervention, while civil society groups and education stakeholders have urged authorities to prioritise rescue operations and strengthen long-term protections around schools.
The issue has become another focal point in Nigeria’s broader debate over insecurity, with growing pressure on authorities to ensure schools remain safe spaces and that communities affected by abductions receive both immediate support and lasting solutions.
