A tragic incident has left a Canadian family in mourning after a 19-year-old man from Quebec was shot dead while vacationing in the Dominican Republic, in what authorities believe was a robbery attempt.
The victim, identified as Tristan Primeau-Pointras from Sainte-Julienne, Quebec, was killed in the early hours of March 23, 2026, while travelling with his brother in the Puerto Plata region. According to Dominican Republic police, the brothers were returning to their hotel after stopping at a food establishment when they were intercepted by armed assailants.
Officials said the attackers approached the victims along the Puerto Plata–Maimon highway, allegedly intending to carry out a robbery. During the encounter, one of the suspects reportedly opened fire, fatally wounding the young Canadian.
Emergency responders rushed Primeau-Pointras for medical attention, but he later succumbed to his injuries. Reports indicate he had been travelling with family members and was staying at a hotel in the area at the time of the attack.
Authorities in the Dominican Republic have since arrested two suspects in connection with the killing. The individuals, identified by police as Jordi Yúnior Severiano and Rangel Merete Rodríguez, are currently in custody and are expected to face prosecution as investigations continue.
Police also confirmed that evidence recovered during the arrests included cash and suspected narcotics, as investigators work to fully determine the circumstances surrounding the deadly encounter.
The victim’s hometown of Sainte-Julienne has expressed deep sorrow following the incident, with community members and officials offering condolences to the grieving family. Tributes have continued to pour in, describing the teenager as a vibrant young man whose life was cut short far from home.
The killing has once again raised concerns about the safety of tourists in parts of the Caribbean nation, particularly in areas known for criminal activity targeting visitors. Authorities have assured the public that efforts are ongoing to bring all those responsible to justice.
As investigations continue, the tragedy stands as a painful reminder of the risks that can arise even during what is meant to be a time of отдых and relaxation, leaving a Canadian family devastated and a community in grief.
