In Nigeria: APC Drops Uzodimma as National Convention Chairman, Appoints Masari in Major Shake-Up

ABUJA, Nigeria — The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has reshuffled leadership of its 2026 National Convention Central Coordination Committee, removing Governor Hope Uzodimma as chairman and appointing former Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari as the new committee head, party officials confirmed on Friday.

The national convention scheduled for March 27–28, 2026 is a key internal event where party stakeholders meet ahead of primary elections and broader preparations for the 2027 general elections, making the leadership of its planning committee strategically significant.

In official announcements issued by the APC’s National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, the party said that while Uzodimma was initially selected to lead the central committee in early February, a reconstituted body has now been approved following extensive consultations among national leaders and stakeholders.

Under the revised structure of the coordination committee, Uzodimma who also serves as Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum has been reassigned to the role of treasurer, while Masari, a longtime party member and former governor, will steer convention planning as chairman.

The APC also expanded the committee’s membership from the original 73 members to 90, bringing in additional party chieftains and leaders to broaden representation and engagement across the party’s internal structures. Among those added are prominent lawmakers and senior party officials.

In addition to Masari’s appointment, other senior party figures filled leadership roles within the committee: Former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim was named Vice Chairman I and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who chairs the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, was appointed Vice Chairman II, while Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni will continue as Secretary of the committee.

The leadership shake-up reflects the APC’s efforts to manage internal zoning considerations, strategic priorities, and broad stakeholder involvement as it finalises planning for its national convention where key decisions about party direction, organisational structures, and upcoming primaries are expected to be made.

Political analysts say changes in the coordination committee’s leadership at this stage show how parties often recalibrate internal arrangements to balance interests among governors, lawmakers, and influential party blocs ahead of major events that shape electoral positioning.

Uzodimma’s reassignment and Masari’s elevation come at a time when the APC is consolidating its internal structures while preparing to maintain its dominance after years as Nigeria’s ruling party.
