The Indigenous Biafran's has sharply criticised recent comments by United States lawmakers warning that Nigeria could “disintegrate” if religious freedom and security challenges are not addressed, rejecting assertions that national unity inherently ensures the safety of all groups, Dalena Reporters and related posts on social media indicate.
IPOB, a pro-Biafra group publicly responded to remarks by members of the U.S. Congress who had raised concerns about inter-religious tensions and insecurity in Nigeria during hearings calling the lawmakers’ comments a mischaracterisation of Nigeria’s domestic realities.
In its rebuttal, the separatist movement accused U.S. legislators of overlooking long-standing governance failures and structural inequalities that, it says, have fuelled unrest in various regions of Nigeria. IPOB’s statement also disputed claims that national unity automatically translates into safety for Christians or other communities, arguing that such claims oversimplify the complex drivers of conflict and insecurity.
It reiterated calls for dialogue, equitable treatment and systemic reforms rather than simplistic narratives of disintegration versus unity a message that echoes the group’s longstanding demand for self-determination and political autonomy in the southeastern region of Nigeria.
Analysts note that IPOB’s sharp reaction reflects broader tensions between the group which traces its roots to historic secessionist movements like Biafra and both Nigerian authorities and international voices commenting on Nigeria’s stability. Requests for deeper structural reforms have been a consistent theme in IPOB’s public communications.
