A Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court in Ikeja has sentenced a security guard to life imprisonment for the rape of a 37-year-old school nurse inside a school clinic, officials said on Wednesday.

The convict, Emmanuel Buchi, and the survivor were both employees of Greensprings School, Awoyaya, Ibeju-Lekki, where the attack occurred on November 27, 2021, during a night shift in the school clinic.

Delivering judgment, Justice Rahman Oshodi found Buchi guilty of rape and assault occasioning harm, saying the Lagos State Government had proved the case against him beyond reasonable doubt. The judge described him as a “pathological liar” whose defence collapsed under scrutiny.

Justice Oshodi noted that Buchi demonstrated no remorse throughout the trial, repeatedly claiming that the nurse had consented to the encounter despite the evidence presented. Under Nigerian law, life imprisonment is the mandatory sentence for the offence of rape, reflecting the severity with which the court treats such crimes.

The judge emphasised that the circumstances of the case were especially disturbing because Buchi was entrusted with protecting lives and property on the school premises but instead became the perpetrator of the crime. According to the judgment, on the night of the incident Buchi left his duty post, entered the school clinic without authorisation, and committed the offence while the nurse was alone.

Medical evidence presented during the trial showed injuries consistent with the survivor’s account, and the court also relied on Buchi’s extra-judicial statement to the police, in which he admitted that the nurse told him “leave me now,” a statement he later claimed to interpret as consent.

Justice Oshodi rejected Buchi’s claim that the nurse was his girlfriend, calling it a fabricated defence contradicted by his own statements to the police. The court found that Buchi used force and violence during the attack.

In addition to the life sentence for rape, Buchi was also sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for assault occasioning harm, with both terms to run concurrently. The judge ordered that his name be entered into the Lagos State Sexual Offences Register.

The prosecution, led by Babajide Boye, called three witnesses and tendered several exhibits, while the convict was the sole witness for the defence. According to the prosecution, the charges contravened Sections 173 and 258 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
