Two people have been fatally shot near Grande Prairie, northern Alberta, authorities confirmed, and a 42-year-old man is in custody in connection with the incident after police issued a dangerous person alert earlier in the day. RCMP officers responded to reports of multiple shootings in the area and tracked the suspect — described as armed and dangerous who was later arrested near the scene.
Police have stated that the deceased and the suspect were known to each other, and investigators do not believe there is an ongoing public safety threat following the arrest, signalling the violence was targeted rather than random.
Grande Prairie RCMP are leading the homicide investigation, and additional details, including the identities of the victims and the suspect’s motive, have not yet been released pending further inquiries. Authorities have appealed to anyone with information to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.
The shooting adds to broader concerns around gun violence in Alberta, where law enforcement units continue to track and address incidents involving firearms to ensure community safety.
