A small multi-engine aircraft reportedly crashed into traffic on a major Florida highway Monday night after attempting an emergency landing, sparking serious concern among drivers and onlookers. The aircraft identified as a Beechcraft 55 — attempted to land on the busy Interstate 95 (I-95) near Orlando, but went down on the roadway and collided with a Toyota Camry, according to local authorities.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the Camry was driven by a 57-year-old woman who suffered minor injuries and was taken to Viera Hospital; by some good fortune, the two men aboard the plane a 27-year-year-old pilot and a 27-year-old passenger — emerged unhurt and declined medical treatment.
Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene: debris scattered across the busy highway, traffic coming to an abrupt halt, and emergency crews scrambling to secure the area. The crash partially blocked I-95 in both directions, forcing troopers to shut down several lanes while crews worked to clear wreckage and tend to the injured.
Officials said the plane had reported engine trouble before the attempted landing prompting what was likely a last-minute effort to get down safely. The incident is now under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and FHP, to determine the exact cause of the crash and whether any safety protocols were breached.
As of now, there is no report of fatalities, but the crash serves as a sharp reminder of the dangers posed when aircraft attempt emergency landings on busy public roadways. The prompt response of emergency services likely prevented what could have been a far greater tragedy.
