A hand grenade explosion in a residential compound along Abacha Road in the Maraba area of Nasarawa State on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, left a female soldier and two children seriously injured in what authorities are investigating as a tragic accident.
Preliminary reports indicate that the explosion occurred at about 11:46 a.m. when a neighbour found the unexploded grenade while cleaning her apartment and asked the soldier, identified as Mohammed, to help determine whether it was safe or should be discarded. Unaware of its danger, the device detonated as soon as it was handled, causing severe injuries to her left wrist and other parts of her body, as well as serious injuries to the children.
The device is believed to have been left in the apartment three years ago by a yet-to-be-identified soldier who had served in the North-East, according to an incident report obtained by national media.
After the explosion, Mohammed was initially taken to Nagari Allah Private Hospital in Keffi for emergency care before being transferred to the Defence Headquarters Medical Centre in Abuja and later referred to Cedarcrest Hospital, Apo, where she is now receiving treatment and is reported to be stabilising.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine how the military-grade explosive remained unsecured in a residential area for years and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
