Kanu’s Lawyer Vows to Appeal Life Sentence, Calls Verdict a “Travesty of Justice”

Abuja — Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, IPOB leader, has announced plans to appeal the life imprisonment sentence handed down by Justice James Omotosho, labelling the ruling a “travesty of justice.

In a statement to the press outside the Federal High Court, Aloy Ejimakor said his team would first file at the Court of Appeal, arguing that key legal and constitutional errors were made in the lower court’s judgment.  If necessary, he added, they would take the case all the way to the Supreme Court

Ejimakor sharply criticised the conviction, saying it was based on Kanu’s broadcasts rather than any proven act of violence:

“How can you convict a man for making a broadcast … not even tied to any single incidents of violence?”

He described the sentence as “cruel and unusual,” vowing not to allow it to stand.

Meanwhile, Kanu’s legal team called the entire verdict a symptom of political persecution, warning that it could set a dangerous precedent for free speech in Nigeria.
