Lagos, Nigeria – October 9, 2025
The Yoruba Union has warned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against using security agencies to stop the planned #FreeNnamdiKanu protest scheduled for October 20 in Abuja.
In a statement on Thursday, the group said the protest, being organized by activist Omoyele Sowore, is a constitutional and peaceful civic action. It cautioned that any attempt to deploy the police, army or DSS to suppress demonstrators would be an abuse of power.
The group said continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu despite court rulings was unjust and a violation of fundamental human rights. It accused the Federal Government of disobeying the rule of law.
The Yoruba Union also criticized individuals allegedly working against Kanu’s release, warning that political interests must not override justice.
The group urged President Tinubu to order Kanu’s release and open dialogue to address rising grievances across the country.
It added that suppressing peaceful protests would further divide the nation and increase public distrust in government.
The Federal Government has not yet responded to the warning.
