WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that American military forces have destroyed and sunk nine Iranian naval vessels and “largely destroyed” Iran’s naval headquarters as part of the intensifying military confrontation between the United States and Iran. The developments mark a significant escalation in hostilities and come amid broader conflict involving U.S., Israeli and Iranian forces.

Posting on his social media platform, Trump said that the United States had been informed that nine Iranian warships some described as “relatively large and important” — had been destroyed and sunk. The president warned that U.S. operations would continue, declaring that remaining Iranian naval vessels would “soon be floating at the bottom of the sea.” In a separate strike, Trump said Iranian naval headquarters had suffered extensive damage.

The U.S. military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) further acknowledged early Sunday that a Jamaran-class Iranian corvette had been struck by U.S. forces in the Gulf of Oman as part of what has been described as Operation Epic Fury, aimed at crippling Iran’s maritime and military capabilities.

Trump’s announcement came amid reports that at least three American service members were killed and five others seriously wounded in the broader conflict, marking the first U.S. military casualties in the escalation. Trump has characterized the campaign as necessary to eliminate threats emanating from Iranian forces, even as the conflict continues to widen.

Iranian authorities have not confirmed details of the alleged naval losses or the destruction of their naval headquarters. Tehran has responded to prior U.S. and Israeli strikes with missile and drone attacks targeting U.S. bases and allied territories in the region, further raising the stakes.

The ongoing military confrontation has spurred international concern, with world leaders calling for restraint, humanitarian safeguards and renewed diplomatic efforts to avoid a broader regional conflagration with severe global implications.
