Tension and fear have surged across Ogidi, a community in the Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, following a late-evening attack in which gunmen shot dead the town’s President General and another resident, according to multiple sources and statements from the Anambra State Police Command.

The incident, which occurred on Friday evening, February 6, unfolded at the Ogidi School Field, a central public gathering space, leaving residents on edge and many confined to their homes amid fears of further violence. The police have linked the killings to a possible reprisal involving the recent capture and killing of a known notorious cultist in the community.

In an official statement on Saturday, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Police Command, expressed deep regret over the killings. He confirmed that both victims including the President General, a prominent community leader were shot dead in what authorities allege was a retaliation for local cult activity.

“The incident led to the immediate deployment of police operatives to the scene, where they took control and commenced investigations,” Ikenga said, noting that investigators are gathering eyewitness accounts and intelligence to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Local residents, speaking on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, described the loss as deeply distressing and said the attack has heightened anxiety throughout the community. One resident noted the pervasive fear, emphasizing that neighbors are uncertain whether more violence might follow.

The police spokesperson also urged residents to remain calm and assist authorities by providing information that could aid the ongoing investigation. “All efforts are being intensified to bring those responsible to justice,” Ikenga added, reassuring the public that security agencies are working to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

This violent episode underscores ongoing concerns over cult-related violence and insecurity in parts of Anambra State, where community leaders and authorities have repeatedly called for more robust security measures to curb criminal activities. As investigations continue, Ogidi remains on edge, mourning the loss of its leader while hoping for swift arrests and justice for the slain victims.
