RABAT / ABUJA — As the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) progresses into its knockout stage, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have emerged as one of the tournament’s most formidable sides and could encounter North African football powerhouses Algeria and Morocco on the way to the final in Rabat on January 18, 2026

After completing the group phase with a perfect record, topping Group C with nine points, Nigeria secured its place in the Round of 16 and set up a last-16 clash with Mozambique, the third-place side from Group F. A victory there would propel the Super Eagles into the quarter-finals, where their opponent is projected to be the winner of the last-16 tie between Algeria (Group E winners) and DR Congo.

Should Nigeria advance past that quarter-final hurdle, the potential semi-final pairing could involve Morocco, the host nation and one of the tournament’s pre-tournament favourites, or Tanzania, South Africa or Cameroon teams competing on the opposite side of the bracket. This sequence of matchups illustrates the Super Eagles’ challenging but high-profile possible pathway to the final.

Both North African nations have displayed strong performances in the group stages. Algeria topped Group E with a perfect record, and captain Riyad Mahrez has been among the tournament’s leading scorers, bolstering his squad’s knockout credentials. Morocco, as hosts, have similarly impressed combining solid results with home support and tactical discipline although their precise knockout path will depend on how Group A finishes.

Marching deep into AFCON would mark a significant achievement for Nigeria, long regarded as one of Africa’s football heavyweights. A potential meeting with Algeria or Morocco — both former continental title contenders — would not only be a marquee matchup but also a test of tactical and physical resilience. The Super Eagles, led by stars such as Victor Osimhen and Alex Iwobi, have shown offensive firepower throughout the group matches.

The AFCON 2025 final is scheduled for January 18, 2026, at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, where the continent’s top teams will vie for the prestigious trophy.
